Building an overseas community

In 2024, I was appointed as the Community Liaison and Events Manager for Joint Forces Command, Brunssum (Netherlands). I responsible for curating an engaging activity schedule and events plan for the British overseas military community of approx. 300 service personnel and their families based in the Netherlands and Geilenkirchen, Germany.

Working closely with military charities and the European Joint Support Unit in Belgium, I ensured the UK spouse and family network were fully supported during their overseas deployment.

I incorporated my marketing experience into the role by introducing a communications strategy and brand book, editing a new Community Newsletter, executing a new events plan and introducing new fund stream opportunities with support from forces charities such as BFBS, SSAFA and NAAFI.

The result? In January 2024, we successfully drafted a winning bid for £5,000 from military charity NAAFI to purchase outdoor equipment for families. Over the year, we held over 50 community events in the calendar, with attendance of 85% for larger scale events. From Tea & Toast, to Family Friendly Fridays and welcoming HM Ambassador to the Netherlands to the King's Birthday official celebration, with entertainment from the Royal Marines Band and Military Wives Choir.

For my efforts within the overseas community in Brunssum, I was awarded a commendation from Major General Mark Pullan CBE and Warrant Officer Julian Spalding MBE, something which I will keep with pride.
